As summer comes to an end and we head back to the city, in my case London, it’s easy to forget to adapt our skincare to the air around us. We love cities and all they have to offer, our skin however? Not so much. Harsh environmental factors such as dirt, pollution, hard water and the weather can attack your skin’s protective barriers. A lot of tiny particles that pollute the air are also small enough to burrow into your skin and cause some serious damage.
This includes contributing to fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, dryness, blemishes and irritations. A scientific study comparing life in Beijing and rural China showed that urban pollution could age a woman’s skin 10% faster. But fear not! The Korean skin care regime as well as working with your skin to fight all the other daily battles it has to face, also tackles this important factor in modern living.
This is where the 10 Step Regime kicks pollution’s butt!
Double cleansing as well as exfoliation helps to clarify and clear out those harmful particles, as well as essences, serums and moisturises to pack the hydration and pollution fighting ingredients back in. A multi-layered approach is usually the best way to tackle any persistent problem, and a beefed up skin care regime is the best defence against consistent and relentless problems such as the one hanging in the air. If pollution is a problem for you, (aka you don't live in the remote countryside) make sure to look out for ingredients like collagen, antioxidants like Green Tea, Vitamins A, C & E, and niacinamide + ceramides to strengthen your skin barriers and draw out impurities.
Don’t forget to end your routine with some SPF (always end with SPF!), whether it’s on its own or incorporated in your foundation/BB cream! People tend to think less of SPF while in the city, usually because they're working and not in sun + holiday mode, but it is always just as important to remember, and just as relentless an issue as pollution.
